This according to an article on the WSJ blog discussing the recent National Association of Home Builders conference.
While focus has been on the aging baby boomer population for a while now, it turns out their kids are actually an even larger demographic!
An important finding: They want to walk everywhere. “One-third are willing to pay for the ability to walk. They don’t want to be in a cookie-cutter type of development. …The suburbs will need to evolve to be attractive to Gen Y.”
Outdoor space is still important but just enough for grilling or entertaining...certainly not so much that they'll spend their weekends mowing the lawn.
One presenter showed slides of homes that resembled hotel lobbies :) Apparently this group has been dubbed 'the dawdlers': a generation putting off marriage and family - for the time being. “A house in the suburbs is not for them. At least not yet.”
